Advice On Becoming A Better SEO Professional
Julie Joyce and Link Fish Media are one of my favorites and this was one of the reason why I took an advantage from the ground created by James Agate (Thanks for this James
) and seek the permission to write a post on her blog like James. (Editor’s note: It’s our pleasure Moosa!)
Recently one of the employees at Link Fish Media completed her master’s degree and she wrote about her experience. At the end of her post, she mentioned some takeaways. I found them really inspiring and so I felt like discussing more about them.
All I am going to do here is to take each of her take aways and explain how each one can help us improve ourselves as a better SEO.
- Life happens but knowing how to deal with it in a healthy way can help when unexpected obstacles arise.
I think SEO is exactly same! So you were working, building links, creating content and everything was going just fine and you were getting good amount of traffic and sales. Suddenly one day you hear that one of the Google animals have hit the internet and all of a sudden you lost 85% of your total traffic.
If you prefer not to panic, look deeper in to things and analyze where you have been wrong. Then only you will be able to face and cross the obstacles easily and effectively.
- Planning goes a long way. Of course you can’t plan for every single thing but being prepared for anything can save you a lot of time later.
We often hear that a marketing campaign or project failed because of the poor planning and management. Clearly, good planning is key to success. Targets get easier to achieve if they are well planned, beforehand.
But, if you don’t plan things and just focus on generating quick results by cutting edges, then you might get a good ROI in the beginning but in a longer run you may not be the part of the game.
- Be open and flexible.
This is one of the most important! What if you continue to focus on previous tactics like comment spamming, article spinning and more, even after the panda and penguin update. Apparently sticking to the old tactics will only get things worse. One has to be open and flexible to keep up. The beauty of this industry is that things here change rapidly, what works today might not work tomorrow so one should be open to the change and should be flexible enough to adopt it or else he would lose in the longer run.
- Prioritizing is absolutely necessary. When so much is due at the same time, prioritizing and maximizing your time is key to get as much done as you can with little time.
SEO is not just about getting top rankings for a website against the desired key words and phrases. Over the time, it has changed a lot and now SEO includes branding, sales, traffic and much more. In that case, prioritizing things is the key, one need to set the priorities to make most out of his/her time or else you will end up having too much in hand and get very little out of the time that has been spent.
- Network and stay in touch with people
Every authority blog like SEOmoz, SEER or even Link Fish Media itself, advises the very same thing: to build strong relationship and create real networks with the people belonging to the niche to build links and improve your business branding. The more you are social and communal, the more chances you will get to learn new things, improve the branding and a lot more.
Personally, I loved the advice by Cynamon. Her advice helped me a lot to improve myself and to work as a better marketing professional. If you would like to add any advice that can help, I would love to hear that.

Thank you Noman! Although this is a bit out of the track question but the easy answer to that is… we all need to move out of the comfort zone and build some real links…
In my opinion link building is relationship building and creating value in the website that people love to or at least don’t mind linking to you…
If you think Blog Comments are making the worth of your brand… go for it (mostly dont) but if they are not then I would prefer to drop this idea…same goes with all!
If you ask me personally what 3 tactics that I use the most are:
1. Guest Blogging
2. Direct Email Out Reach
3. Create something Link Worthy for the client
